USDA's nutrition assistance programs touch the lives of one in four American consumers annually and the nutrition education efforts associated with select programs offer a powerful opportunity to promote food security and improve dietary quality among eligible individuals and families. Within USDA, nutrition education is coordinated as part of a larger federal response to increase food and nutrition security at every stage of life and to improve the health and physical well-being of program participants.
The Food and Nutrition Service offers nutrition education according to statute through the nutrition assistance programs. The National Institute of Food and Agriculture administers the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) through Land-Grant Universities.
Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 Highlights include:
- SNAP-Ed reporting system progress and related directives as required by the 2018 Farm Bill.
- Highlights from new and developing coordinated nutrition education and promotion initiatives.
- Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on nutrition education.
- A summary of nutrition education funding by program, participation estimates, and final SNAP-Ed and EFNEP state allocations for FY 2021.
This report to Congress responds to a requirement included in Section 4019 of the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (2018 Farm Bill; PL 115-334).
