SNAP Retailer Reminder - IRS Rule

Important SNAP and WIC EBT Information

Congress passed a new law that may affect you

  • The company that provides your EBT machine is now required by law to report to the IRS how much you have been paid.
  • The first report is due to the IRS in February 2012 for all payments made to you in 2011.
  • In order to report your EBT sales to the IRS, you must provide your tax identification number to the company that provides your EBT equipment.
  • You either have received or will soon receive a letter from the company that provides your EBT equipment asking for your tax identification number and providing more information and instructions.
  • If you do not provide your tax identification number to your EBT equipment company, the law requires them to hold back money from your bank deposits.
  • It’s very important to make sure that you are providing tax identification information only to the EBT equipment company you have a contract with:
    • If you are using a no‐cost EBT machine, that company is either JPMorgan, Fidelity National Information Services, or Affiliated Computer Services.
    • If you use your machine to take other debit and credit cards, then the company you have a contract with should be in touch with you.

If you have any questions about this requirement, please contact your tax professional.
