As the time for reauthorization of SNAP again approaches, it is useful to take stock of its accomplishments, identify those features that have contributed to its success, and look for new opportunities to strengthen operations to achieve program goals more fully. Resource | Research | Breastfeeding Evaluation of the Birth Month Breastfeeding Changes to the WIC Food Packages

In 2006, FNS asked the Institute of Medicine to review the WIC food packages. The IOM proposed major changes to improve nutrition and encourage breastfeeding but also expressed the concern that changes related to partial breastfeeding may have unintended consequences. The IOM recommended that FNS conduct an impact study evaluating the birth month breastfeeding changes to the WIC food packages.

The Conference on Access to Food, held in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 18 and 19, 1995, was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Consumer Service. The conference was held to bring together food access experts to share their knowledge and help USDA build an agenda to increase access to food for low-income Americans.
