Incident: Situation of Distress - Blizzard

Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)
- On Dec. 27, 2022, FNS granted approval for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, which administers The Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR), request to use USDA Foods to operate a disaster household distribution. This request is in response to food assistance needs resulting from a situation of distress due to blizzard conditions. The disaster household distribution food package will be provided to approximately 700 individuals on Dec. 27, 2022. The pre-packed boxes will be distributed by the tribal emergency program, Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe’s Rez Runners. The disaster household package will contain shelf stable dried fruit, canned fruits, vegetables, and beans, canned meat (chicken beef and beef stew), spaghetti sauce, macaroni, egg mix, peanut butter, cereal, and evaporated milk.
- On Dec. 22, 2022, FNS granted approval for the Oglala Sioux Tribe, which administers The Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR), request to use USDA Foods to operate a disaster household distribution. This request is in response to food assistance needs resulting from a situation of distress due to blizzard conditions. These conditions have lead to blocked roads and dangerous wind chills and temperatures through Dec. 23, 2022. The disaster household distribution food package will be provided to 1,600 households on Dec. 23 at two distribution sites on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The pre-packed boxes will be distributed at two sites on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The disaster household package will contain whole chicken , 2 packages ground beef or 1 beef round roast, 1 bag rice, 1 bag potatoes, 1 bag flour, 4 cans of vegetables, 2 cans of fruit or 2 units of dried fruit, 1 package cheese and 1 bag dry beans.
- On Dec. 21, 2022, FNS granted approval for the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, which administers The Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR), request to use USDA Foods to operate a disaster household distribution. This request is in response to food assistance needs resulting from a situation of distress due to blizzard conditions. Roads are blocked stranding people in their homes with no access to food. The disaster household distribution food package will be provided to 624 individuals beginning on Dec. 22, 2022, through Dec. 26, 2022. The pre-packed boxes will be distributed at 6 community centers. The disaster household package will contain juice, canned mixed vegetables, canned beef stew, bakery mix, macaroni, rice, canned beef, peanut butter, UHT milk and evaporated milk.

Food Distribution Programs
- USDA Foods have been utilized for congregate feeding on the Oglala Sioux Reservation at Pine Ridge/Wanblee.
- On April 5, FNS approved a disaster household distribution program for the Pine Ridge/Oglala Sioux Tribe for USDA Foods distributed to approximately 60 tribal households from March 26-29, 2019. Packages contained from 11-14 pounds of USDA Foods.
