SUBJECT: Selection of the 2006 Building for the Future Awards Winners
TO: Regional Directors
Child Nutrition Programs
All Regions

We would like to thank all of the regions and state agencies for their 2006 Building for the Future Awards (BFTF) nominations in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). These awards are designed to recognize state agencies and sponsoring organizations whose practices, in one of five management areas, go beyond basic program requirements.

Several staff from the Headquarters’ Child Nutrition Division evaluated the state agency and sponsoring organization applications and have made the following selections:

Enhancing Program Efficiency Through Technology Montana Department of Health and Human Services
Innovative Training and Technical Assistance Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning
Outreach and Community Partnerships Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services
Program Integrity Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Community Nutrition Programs
Nutrition Education and Promotion No selection made

Although there were some very commendable nominations that show initiatives to improve program management, we were concerned with the low number of applications submitted and the lack of competition in each of the categories. Due to the limited response to the BFTF Awards, we will not announce the winners at the CACFP National Professionals Association Conference in Orlando, Florida as mentioned in our solicitation letter. We ask that each region recognize and present the awards to your respective winners and respond to the non-winning nominations as appropriate. We will post the winners and summaries of their accomplishments on our website.

We appreciate your support in encouraging participation in the BFTF Awards since it began in 2001. Because of declining interest and the limited number of nominations submitted, we have determined that Headquarters will no longer solicit nominations for the BFTF Awards, however, regional offices may continue these awards if they choose.

STANLEY C. GARNETT
Director
Child Nutrition Division
