SUBJECT: | Extensions for USDA FNS-Approved COVID-19 Waivers through September 30, 2020 | |
TO: | Regional Directors Special Nutrition Programs All Regions | WIC State Agency Directors All State Agencies |
The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (PL 116-127) provides the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) statutory and regulatory waiver authorities necessary in a public health emergency such as COVID-19 to encourage social distancing and reduce visits to WIC clinics. To date, the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) has approved requests from all WIC state agencies to waive select statutory and regulatory requirements through June 30, 2020.
We have heard from our state partners that, as reopening is moving forward, precautions should still be taken and flexibilities are still needed. Therefore, USDA FNS is extending all currently active waivers through Sept. 30, 2020 for all WIC state agencies that choose to continue operations under such waivers. State and local agency reporting requirements still apply.
USDA FNS will continue to support WIC state agencies as they provide services to WIC participants while they work toward a safe and timely transition back to in-person appointments and regular documentation, as they are able. We strongly believe in the value of the in-person, human connection provided to participants in the clinic, as well as the importance of in-person certification and nutrition assessments.
If a state agency no longer requires a waiver previously granted by USDA FNS or has questions related to this extension, the state agency should contact the appropriate FNS regional office.
