Farmers and Markets: SNAP Staple Food Requirements

Please Note

The updated staple food stocking standards under Criterion A that went into effect Nov. 4, 2026 do not impact most authorized farmers markets and direct marketing farmers.

Farmers markets connect SNAP participants with fresh fruits, vegetables, and other nutritious foods while supporting local farmers and producers. Direct marketing farmers can also directly accept SNAP benefits at farm stands or anywhere they sell eligible food products. We encourage farmers and markets to participate in SNAP to increase food access and strengthen local food systems.

Farmers Markets, Direct Marketing Farmers and SNAP Staple Food Requirements

In general, a farmers market or direct marketing farmer does not need to meet the stocking standards under Criterion A. Instead, farmers markets and direct marketing farmers can qualify under Criterion B if 50% or more of total sales are in staple foods.

If a farmer or market authorized under Criterion A does not meet the updated stocking standards at its next reauthorization, we will automatically evaluate it for eligibility under Criterion B. Farmers and markets do not need to take any special action to change how they are evaluated under the updated stocking standards.

Please note that under the new rule, butter, trail mix, jerky, cheese and fruit dips/spreads, and snack bars no longer count as staple foods for retailer authorization purposes.

Becoming SNAP Authorized

Farmers markets and direct marketing farmers can apply online to become authorized SNAP retailers.

Once authorized, farmers and markets must contact the SNAP Retailer Service Center at 1-877-823-4369 to report any changes that may impact participation in SNAP, such as new locations, operating times, and point of contacts.
