Starting Nov. 4, 2026, stores must meet the updated staple food stocking standards by stocking, at a minimum, the following:
- Seven (7) varieties in each of four (4) staple food categories—dairy, grains, protein, and vegetables or fruits – for a total of 28 staple food varieties.
- Three (3) units of staple food variety for a total of 84 stocking units.
- Perishable food in at least three (3) staple food categories.
However, a store specializing in a single staple food category, such as a produce stand specializing in vegetables or fruits, can qualify for authorization if staple food sales make up at least 50% of the store’s total sales.
This calculator is a tool to help you plan how to meet the new stocking standards. FNA's Office of Retailer Operations and Compliance will make the official determination about whether your store meets these requirements.
