SNAP - Extension for Afghani Special Immigrants
FNS guidance of March 20, 2008 provided that the eligibility of Afghani Special Immigrants was in effect through Sept. 30, 2008 under PL 110-161, The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2008. This is to notify you that new legislation under PL 110-329, the Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance, and Continuing Appropriations Act, 2009, provides continuing appropriations for Afghani Special Immigrants and their eligible family members.
The Afghan Allies Protection Act of 2009 under the Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009 (Section 602, Division F of PL 111-8) enacted on March 11, 2009, extended Afghani Special Immigrant (SIV) eligibility for SNAP benefits from six months to eight months.
SNAP - Elimination of the Eight-Month Time Limit for Iraqi and Afghani Special Immigrants
The new legislation provides that SIVs are eligible for all benefits available to the same extent and for the same period of time as refugees pursuant to Section 207 of the Immigrations and Nationality Act.
Guidance on Iraqi and Afghani Special Immigrants
FNS has updated its policy interpretation on how to treat these special immigrants, this new guidance supersedes our previous guidance on Iraqi and Afghani Special immigrants issued on Jan. 24, 2008.
