Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

  • On Jan. 4, 2024, FNS approved the Maine Department of Health and Human Services request to issue mass replacements to impacted households. This waiver approval allows households to receive replacement of benefits as stated in the approval as a result of power outages due to the severe storms that began on Dec. 18th, 2023. The waiver request applies to the following 14 counties: Androscoggin, Aroostook. Franklin, Hancock, Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Oxford, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Sagadahoc, Somerset, Waldo, and Washington and the following 34 towns in Cumberland and York counties: Acton, Alfred, Baldwin, Brunswick, Buxton, Casco, Chebeague Island, Cliff Island, Cornish, Cumberland, Dayton, Falmouth, Frye Island, Gray, Harpswell, Harrison, Hollis, Lebanon, Limerick, Limington, Long Island, Lyman, Naples, Newfield, New Gloucester, North Yarmouth, Parsonsfield, Pownal, Raymond, Sebago, Shapleigh, South Berwick, Standish, and Windham.
  • On Dec. 21, 2023, FNS approved the Maine Department of Health and Human Services request to waive the 10-day reporting requirement for food purchased with SNAP benefits that was lost as a result of power outages due to wind and rainstorms that occurred Dec. 18, 2023, through Dec. 19, 2023. The waiver request applies to all residents in the State of Maine and is in effect through Jan. 18, 2024.

  • On Oct. 23, 2019, FNS approved a Maine request for timely household reporting of food loss for Maine. This waiver approval allows households to make a request for replacement of SNAP benefits through Nov. 6, 2019. These benefits allow households to replace food lost as a result of a storm that caused widespread power outages which began on Oct. 17, 2019.
2017

Incident: Severe Wind and Rain Storm

When: Began October 2017

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
  • On Nov. 8, 2017, FNS approved the Maine Department of Health and Human Services' request for timely household reporting of food loss for the state. This waiver approval allowed households that suffered power outages due to a severe wind and rain storm to make a request at their local office for replacement of SNAP benefits through Nov. 27, 2017. These replacement SNAP benefits allowed households to replace food lost as a result of the storm.
