Additional Information

The projects noted above are expected to continue increasing the utilization, and therefore the demand for nutritious foods, such as whole grains, vegetables, legumes, and fruits, as well as foods that reflect various regions. These efforts are also designed to strengthen small and rural school food authorities’ access to nutritious agricultural commodities through food systems transformation and targeted grants.

Ongoing collection and sharing of best practices related to the use of nutritious foods in school meals, along with these incentivizing activities are expected to indirectly benefit producers who supply food products to schools:

  • Nutrition education (including farm to school nutrition education);
  • Using local agricultural products in scratch cooking;
  • Developing student-informed menu items.
